Getting your packing right before a Uganda safari can make a real difference to your comfort and enjoyment. Here is the list our guides at Wagwan Tours Uganda hand to every guest before departure.

Clothing

  • Neutral colours — khaki, olive, beige, and grey. Avoid white (dust), black (heat), and blue (attracts tsetse flies).
  • Lightweight long sleeves and trousers for game drives and gorilla trekking.
  • A warm fleece or light down jacket — mornings and evenings in the highlands can be genuinely cold.
  • Waterproof jacket — essential for gorilla and chimp trekking at any time of year.
  • Sturdy waterproof hiking boots — mandatory for gorilla trekking in Bwindi and forest walks.

Gear and Equipment

  • Binoculars — 8x42 is the sweet spot for safari
  • Camera with a telephoto lens (200mm minimum; 400mm is ideal)
  • Extra memory cards and batteries
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Small dry bag for boat trips and sudden rain
  • Reusable water bottle

Health and Safety

  • High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
  • DEET insect repellent (50% minimum)
  • Malaria prophylaxis — start before you travel
  • Personal first-aid kit with blister plasters

Documents

  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (required for entry)
